People who take on roles of authority — police officers, business owners, parents — are often caught in the trap of being accused of being tyrants. Tyranny is not authority and knowing the difference with a distinction is important.
According to public data easily accessible through Google’s public data explorer, the current unemployment rate in the United States is 9.1% — and in Georgia it is 10.3%. The reason I bring up Georgia specifically is because of something that is going on at Shorter University, based in Rome, Georgia.
Yesterday, I decided to test the new “In-Store Personal Pickup” option Apple is now offering customers when you order from the online Apple Store. I had to take the iPad 2 plunge — times two! — and I placed a nine-item order online at 10:30am in the morning and planned to pick up everything from the 14th Street Apple Store in New York City when I finished teaching later that night.
I am personally not inclined to partake in public displays of affection — there are various Jewish laws that make it inappropriate and, moreover, it is a kind of intimacy that I would only wish to share with my wife and not just random passersby. However, I do not hold it against other people — certainly would not complain to them or about them — it is up to them to share their affection in the manner that they see fit.
Steve Jobs died yesterday at 56, and while I am terribly saddened by his passing, I can’t get over the feeling of euphoria I had earlier in the day with AppleCare support before he died. Perhaps Steve’s greatest legacy is the people he led and then left behind to help us find our way in his absence.
There are few safe harbors in a big city, but one of the most reliable places you can rest your feet every week and not feel afraid is the neighborhood laundromat. Laundromats are busy and packed with people on a shared mission. We don’t have laundry facilities in our building, so we are forced to outsource our laundry. Because our schedules are so wacky, we use the Laundromat’s drop off service where we pay a little extra to have somebody else deal with cleaning our dirty clothes.
We were warned about it for days — the impending hurricane that could cause untold destruction in New York. We were told through the newspaper to stay home and that some people would have to be evacuated to save their lives. In the end, Hurricane Irene turned out to be Tropical Storm Irene by the time she reached New York but I think we learned a few things.
