It's come and gone, the greatest show on Earth. France 98 will be heralded as one of the most successful sporting extravaganza's ever; certainly the finest tournament in its history. For those of you who, like myself, followed every turn of the Cup - every kick, goal, foul and victory - the weeks ahead will leave a void where a wave of excitement has passed by. For others, the Cup was just a distant news spot, hardly worthy of a raised eyebrow.
I invite the latter to leave, and the enthusiast to stay. What follows is a match-by-match account of the World Cup as I saw it, sitting at home by the telly and reading the post-mortem on the Web. If you were unfortunate enough to miss any or all of this football feast, come along and share in the excitement as we find out who beat the best in the world.
My World Cup
France 98 was the longest of the sixteen since Jules Rimet cast the gauntlet way back when. The tournament was broken down into six stages, each of which will be visited in detail. Match by match. Goal by goal. In June, I put my neck on the line and predicted how the Cup would be won, and by whom (see ). It was a long-shot at best, and in many cases, I wasn't far off (and in many cases I was, in case you're thinking I'm blowing my own trumpet). Perhaps you made predictions of your own, or had a favourite in mind, as I did.
If so, put your feet up, turn up the volume, and let's play ball
